Why does it matter to us today if Moshe Rabbeinu was allowed to see Eretz Yisrael but was not allowed to enter? In this shiur, Rav bUrg teaches us the value of seeing Eretz Yisrael and longing for the geula.

In this week's parashah, we find that Moshe Rabbeinu asks Hakadosh Baruch Hu to be allowed to enter into Eretz Yisrael and to see the land. Ultimately, Hakadosh Baruch Hu rejects Moshe's tefillah, and he's not allowed to enter into Eretz Yisrael, but he is invited to see the land. What was the purpose of Hakadosh Baruch Hu answering only half of Moshe Rabbeinu's tefillah? Why was he allowed to see the land? Why was he not allowed to enter into Eretz Yisrael? We know anything that's true is unchanging. If it's true, it's everlasting. One plus one will always equal two. True love has no end. It doesn't change with the winds. It's not that a person got into a bad mood and then they don't love the other person anymore. True love is everlasting. Moshe Rabbeinu was emes. Moshe emes v'sairasai emes. Moshe Rabbeinu was absolutely true. Everything Moshe Rabbeinu touched was everlasting. For this reason, the Torah HaKadoshah is unchanging. That's what Moshe Rabbeinu did in this world. What he touched, it remained that way forever. A pi chassidus has explained that Moshe Rabbeinu wasn't allowed in Tehrit Yisrael.
because that would have brought the geula shlema. The tachlis habriya is to be able to see Hakadosh Baruch Hu in the lowest places in this world. And so we were not yet in a place that it was the right time to bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu into the world in that way because the lowest places had not yet been uncovered. We needed to go into galas, to the deep dark exile, in order to get lower so that we could ultimately reveal Hashem in the lowest places. And so Hakadosh Baruch Hu had no choice but to reject Moshe Rabbeinu's tefillah. And he was not allowed in Tehrit Yisrael. At the same time, Maish Rabbeinu is invited to see the land. What's the purpose of Maish Rabbeinu seeing the land? As we said, anything that Maish Rabbeinu touches, it has everlasting qiyam. So Maish Rabbeinu did something by seeing the land. What exactly did he do? A person in Golis very often finds himself in a place where they cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that's part and parcel of the Golis. If we knew the Golis when exactly it was going to end, and if we had that confidence,

we would be able to negotiate the terrain so much more easily. For example, imagine a person who has a dream crystal clear the night before. And in that dream, Hakadosh Baruch Hu says, these are the Nisyonos that I'm going to bring you today. When those Nisyonos come up, because a person is prepared for them, and they understand that there's an end to these Nisyonos, so then they'll be able to negotiate the terrain of those Nisyonos. But because we have no eyesight, we can't see the end, it makes it so much more difficult to negotiate. So what was the gift that Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave us. that Moshe Rabbeinu was able to endow into Eretz Yisrael? It was the gift of sight to be able to see Eretz Yisrael, to be able to see that even though we find ourselves in the Golis, we can always return. This is what it means when we say, Return our eyes. Why don't we daven just to return us to Eretz Yisrael? Because part of the return to Eretz Yisrael is the hope that we have that we're going to return. The light at the end of the tunnel that we can see. So many Jews today are passing up the opportunity to live in Eretz Yisrael and it's mamish a tragedy.
We have an opportunity that we haven't had in thousands of years and people are so comfortable living outside of Eretz Yisrael that the very notion of moving their lives to Eretz Yisrael is something they just cannot fathom. We've lost our eyesight and it's a terrible tragedy. I know for a fact that Rav Chaim Kanievsky, when people ask him if they should move to Eretz Yisrael or not, he emphatically says yes. And why? Because he holds that it's a mitzvah. He's not making any cheshbonos other than the fact it's a mitzvah that we now have the opportunity to be Mekkaim. Even if you want to hold like the Rambam, that we don't necessarily have a mitzvah. Certainly the Rambam held that it was an Indian godel. We've lost our... We've lost our way. We've lost the... bit of that eyesight. We have an opportunity to see with our own eyes, not just to come on vacation, but to see what it's like to taste a little bit of what's going to be like in Yemos HaMashiach. And even though we're not yet there, we're moving very clearly in that direction. Of course, it's Shabbos Nachamu, and we had a very difficult Tisha B'Av. But now we have the opportunity to experience a little bit of a taste, a little bit of a taste of what the Nacham is going to be. Because so many of us already feel so blessed that.
we were able to live in Eretz Yisroel. Could you imagine what it's going to be like when we have Eretz Yisroel and the ultimate Geula, Yerushalayim is going to be Yerushalayim HaBnuyah. Be'ezer Hashem, we should be Zaycheh, to return our eyes, to be able to see that the light at the end of the tunnel is Mamish, right around the corner, and to invite our brothers and sisters to come participate in the beautiful vision that is Yemos HaMashiach.
